Downtown Campus, University of Texas at San Antonio
Since 2019, Phil Myrick has collaborated with UTSA and their architects (now Page) to bring placemaking principles to the university’s downtown developments. This partnership is focused on ensuring that new investments not only enhance the campus but also foster a vibrant, college-town atmosphere that enriches the downtown community.
A key component of this effort was a Placemaking and Program Strategy for UTSA’a new School of Data Science and the National Security Collaboration Center. This and other UTSA projects are pivotal in positioning the university as the anchor of a resurgent downtown innovation district, reflecting its vision as a dynamic urban campus.
As part of UTSA’s Downtown Campus Master Plan, Phil is delivering a Placemaking Framework to guide the creation of meaningful public spaces. This framework defines the public space experience and includes:
- Vision and Goals: Establishing a direction for public spaces that align with the campus mission.
- Program Narrative: Outlining the types of activities and uses that will bring the spaces to life.
- Places Strategy: Identifying key destinations across the campus and their unique roles.
- Audience Profiles: Understanding the needs of students, faculty, and the broader community.
- Concept Plans: Visualizing connectivity and spatial relationships.
The process has included high-level conversations with UTSA leadership and the Page team to define how the campus environment can advance the university’s mission. These discussions are invaluable for shaping the planning and concept design of campus spaces, while also providing a strategic foundation for programming and long-term management.
The resulting plan will define key “destination” public spaces and their experiences across the campus. These include areas dedicated to food and drink, academic activities, entertainment and recreation, socializing, and quiet, contemplative spaces. By combining innovative design with thoughtful programming, UTSA’s Downtown Campus will not only meet the needs of its growing population but also enhance its role as a vital part of San Antonio’s downtown revitalization.
