What is Placemaking

Placemaking is a process that creates places of lasting value, engages people in crafting the experience of their community, and fosters a sense of belonging. Placemaking is a way to forge a shared vision and build trust between partners. Done well, placemaking builds social capital and social infrastructure and creates long-lasting livable communities. These powerful social outcomes have been top objectives for many of Phil’s clients, including the public sector as well as international aid organizations like the World Bank and USAID.

Placemaking for architecture and urban design

No architect would start designing a building without first having the building program clearly defined, and yet many design projects for parks and public spaces proceed without having the program in place first. Placemaking is very much about taking this first step in defining how a place will be used by people and defining that experience in detail before moving forward into the design stage. Phil has worked with architects and designers worldwide, as a trusted member of the design team whose specialized knowledge informs the space program and concept design.

Placemaking for development

Placemaking is a complete ecosystem that underlies successful mixed-use communities. It’s not a garnish to sprinkle around retail, but rather an authentic attempt to create an experience for people. Phil has advised many developers of mixed-use communities to activate places and create an authentic community while supporting the goals of the developer. The most successful mixed-use projects are real communities and are more sustainable in the long term as a result.

Urban placemaking for public-private partnerships

Many complex initiatives like medical districts, innovation districts, and town-gown joint development projects need placemaking to create success. Placemaking and public-private partnerships go in concert because placemaking is so valuable to articulating goals and strategies, as well as implementation and design.
